A move changes a taxpayer’s tax affiliation. The public finance center responsible for processing the income tax return and tax notices depends on the address occupied on January 1 of the tax year. Reporting your new address on impots.gouv.fr therefore conditions the proper receipt of tax documents, the correct calculation of the housing tax on secondary residences, and the proper functioning of withholding at source.

Knowing the steps for changing your address on impots.gouv helps avoid a notice being sent to the old address or a withdrawal being rejected due to inconsistencies between the declared information.

Property tax and moving: a tax linked to the property, not the address

Most guides on changing tax addresses focus on the online procedure. One point remains under-discussed: the property tax does not follow the taxpayer; it follows the real estate. Changing your postal address on impots.gouv.fr does not automatically update the information related to a property you own.

In the event of selling the vacated property, the seller remains liable for the property tax for the entire year if the sale occurs after January 1. The buyer must ensure that the property appears in their “Real Estate” space after the publication of the notarial deed.

For 2026, the DGFiP indicates a flat-rate revaluation of 0.8% of the bases for both built and unbuilt properties (excluding professional premises). This revaluation applies regardless of the address change, but a move is the ideal time to check the cadastral rental value displayed in your personal space and contest it if it seems incorrect.

Changing your address in the personal space on impots.gouv.fr

The procedure goes through the Public Finances space accessible on impots.gouv.fr. There are two paths after identification with the tax number (13 digits) and password, or via FranceConnect (Ameli account, La Poste, MSA).

Main path: the My Profile section

After logging in, the “My Profile” button at the top right displays personal information. In the “My Personal Information / My Contact Methods” box, a “Modify” button appears under the postal address. The form then guides you to enter the new address.

Once validated, the “Postal Address” field displays the message “Your change of address is being processed”. A confirmation email is sent.

Alternative path: the secure messaging

From the homepage of the personal space, the “Secure Messaging” button allows you to write directly to the public finance center. The steps are as follows: Write, then Change of Situation, then Change of Postal Address. This option is particularly useful when the standard procedure does not work or when a specific supporting document needs to be attached.

Processing time and affiliation with the public finance center

The change of address does not take effect instantly. Processing can take several working days. During this period, tax letters (tax notices, reminders) continue to be sent to the old address.

The affiliation with the new public finance center depends on the date of the move relative to January 1 of the tax year. A move during the year does not change the competent center for the declaration of income from the previous year. The file transfer occurs for the following year.

Two precautions to take in parallel:

  • Check that the email address and phone number associated with the personal space are up to date, as the DGFiP sends notifications through these channels in case of a new notice available.
  • Check the bank details in the “Payments” section then “Manage my direct debit contracts”: a change of address does not modify the registered bank account details, but a move is often an opportunity to change banks.
  • Subscribe if necessary to mail forwarding with La Poste, a separate and paid service, as the tax address change does not redirect physical mail.

Income declaration and withholding at source after a move

Withholding at source continues to function normally after a change of address, provided that the rate transmitted to the employer remains consistent with the declared situation. A move does not automatically change the withholding rate.

During the next declaration campaign, the pre-filled declaration will display the new address if the change has been recorded before the service opening date. Otherwise, you will need to correct the address directly in the online declaration form.

One point deserves attention: a move can change the amount of certain local taxes. The housing tax on secondary residences, for example, depends on the municipality where the property is located. If the old retained housing becomes a secondary residence, it will be subject to this tax starting the following year.

Reporting your change of address by mail or phone

The dematerialized route remains the channel recommended by the DGFiP. For taxpayers who cannot use the online space, two alternatives remain:

  • By mail addressed to the public finance center corresponding to the address on January 1 of the tax year. The number and address of this center are on the last tax notice received.
  • By phone at the number indicated on this same notice. You will need to provide the tax number and the complete new address.
  • Through the online multi-administration address change service, which allows you to notify several organizations simultaneously, but does not replace the update on impots.gouv.fr for precise tax data.

The tax address change remains a separate process from mail redirection and notification to other administrations. Checking the property tax, direct debit contracts, and the email address associated with the account separately avoids unpleasant surprises when receiving the next tax notice.
